“Just use black electric tape to patch his eyeglasses and it’s going to be perfect.”
My jaw dropped.
I was at the doctors office with my son and we had just learned he had strabismus and needed to patch his eye. Just put tape on his glasses? Doesn’t sound like a sound medical recommendation…
Years later, I have a better understanding of the situation.
The problem is some doctors are just very focused on the effectiveness part of the eye patching treatment. To them, what’s important is that the eye can’t see – if the eye cannot see, vision will improve.
However what I understood, as a mother, was that motivating kids requires a combination of creativity, fun, tricks… and more creativity!
Whether it’s transforming a ride to the grocery store into an adventure, a plate of veggies into fun images or turning a simple couch into a ship surrounded by dangerous sharks – mundane should become amazing and chores should become play!
So, as a mother (and illustrator!) I decided that black tape was not going to be “perfect”.
I made a first design and – with the help of Zacharie – we cut it into the shape of his glasses and made it fit. Now he was proud and happy to wear his new stylish eye patches.
Of course, it remains important that the treatment is not only cute but also actually works. This is why today we combine two different eye patches:
Stylish eye patches (The fun part!)
Medical eye patches (The effective part!)
This turns out to be a winning comination as children are happy to comply and wear their eye patch with pride and style… and their vision improves!
